What does the Heat Exchanger DO?
Heat exchanger will not "overcool" engine. Not like a snowmobile tunnel cooler. This entire system is snowbike specific.
Heat exchanger helps maintain enclosure temp, to keep heat in engine when in deep snow.
It is located in bottom of skid plate on KTM/Husky, front of snow shield on Yamaha/Honda. This transfers heat into the aluminum skid/shield and keeps snow melted out and ice from building up.
It also transfers heat up (or back in the case of Yamaha/Honda) keeping cases warm.
It also adds a little extra coolant capacity, helps keep temps more stable.
You will not need to shut off radiators. keeping heat in engine allows radiators and thermostat to function like it was designed, to maintain stable temps without blocking them off completely.
There is a removable powder panel to block off radiator shield for deep snow, when things get cold and snow gets dry and deep. Designed for backcountry, powder days.
Remove panel for hardback road and spring riding. Very warm spring days +45F without a fan can get warm, you may remove upper panels in this case, but we tend to run fully enclosed with all side panels all season.
Keep in mind we are enclosing the exhaust. Frozen snowbike engines with or without a wrap, blanket, skid plate, blocked radiators, and other tricks are a non-issue. Letting engine breathe, and the right combination of enclosure and venting is a key factor.
It is an integrated system designed specifically for the issues that dirt bike engines have, other applications like snowmobiles are a different story.
